Getting Started with SEO: Photographers Edition
The Intersection of Creativity and Visibility
I’ve been a professional wedding + portrait photographer since 2008. And as a professional photographer, I know your artistic skills and creative vision are the heart of your business. However, in today’s digital age, sadly, having a creative vision and stunning portfolio is not enough. I know, inset sad face emoji. :( To ensure your work reaches a wider *cough, cough PAYing* audience, you gotta get in the game and work to understand and leverage Search Engine Optimization (SEO) *if you said leverage like Captain Jack in POTC like I just did, ooh friend - you’re in the right place. 🤣 SEO can help your website rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs), driving more traffic and potential clients to your site. In this beginner’s guide, I’ll help you walk you through the essentials of SEO. This post is tailored specifically for photographers, but a LOT of the principles cross over into other niches…you in? Let’s get after this:
1. Understanding SEO // The Basics
What the heck is SEO?!! SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. 🤓 In a nutshell, it encompasses a range of strategies and techniques designed to improve your website’s visibility on search engines like Google. When people search for terms related to your business—such as "wedding photography" or "portrait photographer" - effective SEO ensures your website appears at the top of the search results.
Why is SEO Important?
For photographers, SEO is crucial because it helps you reach clients who are actively looking for your services. Unlike traditional advertising, which can be disruptive and heavily influences by ever-changing algorithms, SEO connects you with people who already have an interest in what you offer. This makes it a highly effective way to attract potential clients and grow your business.
2. Keyword Research: Finding Your Focus
Identifying the right keywords is THE first step in any SEO strategy is keyword research. Keywords are the terms people type into search engines when looking for information. For photographers, keywords might include "portrait photography," "wedding photographer in [insert your city]," or "creative photography ideas." Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to find relevant keywords with a good balance of search volume and competition. Focus on long-tail keywords - phrases that are a little more specific and often less competitive. For instance, "best wedding photographer in Phoenix" is more targeted than "wedding photographer."
Incorporating Keywords Naturally
Once you have identified your keywords, integrate them naturally into your website content. This includes your homepage, about page, portfolio descriptions, blog posts, and image alt texts. Avoid keyword stuffing (the saaaaaaaame keywords over and over again with no relevancy to what you’re referencing), which can harm your rankings and make your content less readable. Instead, aim for a natural flow that enhances your user’s experience. Not sure where to start? 3. amplify with On-Page SEO: Optimizing Your Website
Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
Title tags and meta descriptions are crucial components of on-page SEO. The title tag is the clickable headline that appears on SERPs, while the meta description provides a brief summary of the page’s content. Both should include your primary keywords and be compelling enough to encourage clicks.
Header Tags and Content Structure
Use header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.) to structure your content. The H1 tag should contain your primary keyword and be used for the main heading of the page. Subheadings (H2, H3) help break up your content into readable sections and should also include relevant keywords.
Image Optimization
As a photographer, your website likely features many images. Optimize these images by using descriptive filenames and alt text that include your keywords. Oh, and be sure to compress your high-resolution images to ensure they load quickly, as page speed is a critical factor in SEO rankings.
4. Off-Page SEO: Building Authority
Backlinks: Quality Over Quantity
Backlinks - technical term for links from other websites to yours - are a significant factor in SEO. They signal to search engines that your website is credible and authoritative. Focus on building high-quality backlinks from reputable sites within your industry. You can achieve this by being tagged via vendor credit, guest blog for a colleague in your industry, participate in photography forums, and/or collaborate with other creatives/photographers so they tag you!
Social Media and SEO
While social media signals do not directly impact SEO, they can drive traffic to your website and increase brand awareness. Share your blog posts, portfolio updates, and client testimonials on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and especially Pinterest (it’s its own search engine!). Do you best to not “post and ghost”, but rather engage with your audience to better build a community around your brand.
5. Local SEO: Targeting Nearby Clients
Claim Your Google My Business Listing
For photographers, local SEO is especially important. Claim and optimize your Google My Business listing to appear in local search results and on Google Maps. Ensure your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) are consistent across all online platforms.
Encourage Client Reviews
Client reviews play a crucial role in local SEO. Encourage satisfied clients to leave positive reviews on Google, Yelp, and other review sites that you’ve chosen to participate with. Respond to reviews - yep, both positive and negative - to show that you value client feedback and are committed to providing excellent service.
6. Content Marketing: Engaging Your Audience
Blogging for Photographers
Blogging is a powerful tool for SEO - I’d argue one of THE top three most powerful tools you have in growing your business. Regularly publishing high-quality blog posts can help you rank for a wider range of keywords, demonstrate your expertise, and engage your audience. Consider topics such as "tips for choosing a wedding photographer," "creative portrait photography ideas," or "behind the scenes of a photoshoot."
Showcasing Your Work
Create detailed blog posts that showcase your recent projects. Include a mix of high-quality images and emotional storytelling to give potential clients a glimpse of your creative process. Use relevant keywords to optimize these posts and increase their visibility on search engines.
